Grandfather attacked in Columbus to be taken off life support, family says

A grandfather beaten in an Applebee’s parking lot will likely die from his injuries, his wife said in a statement read in court.
Ja’Quawn Bridgmon, 27, of Columbus, faces two counts of felonious assault in the Dec. 1 beating. Columbus police detectives alleged in a probable cause affidavit that Bridgmon attacked Cheryl and Jesse Whistler about 12:15 p.m. in the parking lot of the Applebee’s restaurant, 2755 Brice Road, on the city’s Southeast Side.
Jesse Whistler suffered a serious head wound in the assault and was rushed into surgery to relieve pressure in his head, according to the affidavit.
Cheryl Whistler took down the license plate of the vehicle in which police say Bridgmon sped away from the parking lot. Officers found the vehicle and stopped Bridgmon, who they allege in the affidavit admitted he was involved.

According to Cheryl Whistler, Bridgmon said he was “going to teach an old man a lesson” before the assault. It’s not clear based on court records and a Columbus police news release what started the dispute. Whistler said in the statement that Bridgmon turned his vehicle around to confront her and her husband, got out of the vehicle and approached the couple.
Bridgmon slapped her in the face and hit her in the face with a cane, Cheryl Whistler said in the statement. Jesse Whistler was backing away when Bridgmon shoved him, and he fell and struck his head, she said.
“We will be taking Jesse off life support today,” Cheryl Whistler said in her statement read in court. “(Bridgmon) has caused the death of my husband and best friend of 30 years, father to five children, grandfather to 13 and great-grandfather to seven.”
