Governor Gavin Gruesome of California (or at least some flunky in his press office) posted something on Twitter that reminded me of this post from last week Red States, Blue Cities.
Notice the phrase being used: “murder rate”. The murder rate is typically used to compare apples to apples by looking at the number of homicides per a specific unit of measure, usually per 100,000 people. That way you aren’t comparing very large cities with very small cities. A lot of smaller cities like Memphis, TN have much higher “murder rates” than large cities like Chicago. While Memphis has had “only” 106 homicides so far in 2025 (according to Grok) while Chicago has seen 275 according to Hey Jackass!, Memphis also only has an estimated population of 610,919 while Chicago’s population is an estimated 2,721,308. Looking at it from that perspective, while Chicago has slightly more than 2.5 times the homicides that Memphis has had, Chicago also has almost 4.5 more people than Memphis. In other words, Chicago’s “murder rate” is lower than that of Memphis even though Memphis has fewer total homicides in 2025.
If we take the numbers he provided at face value, then yes Houston had far more homicides in 2024 than San Francisco. Even if we stipulate that, that doesn’t tell us the rate because Houston has a population of around 2,314,157, making it the 4th largest city in America, while San Francisco has an estimated population of only 827,526, making it the 17th largest city in America and only 4th largest in California. San Fran is an iconic city so it gets outsized attention but it really is a pretty small city relatively speaking. Part of that is because San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities in America to live in and part is because San Fran is crammed into the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, surrounded on most sides by the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, so it can’t grow outward. The city and county are less than 47 square miles, less than half the physical footprint of my nearest city of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
This means that Houston’s population is almost 2.8 times larger than San Francisco. Newsome’s Press Office didn’t bother to take this into account even though they referred to the “murder rate” because they (rightly) assumed that their core audience of mindless liberal sheep (but I repeat myself) won’t bother thinking about this, and will just respond to the post with a hearty “Orange Man Bad”.
It just seems weird to me. Why would Newsome compare San Francisco which isn’t even the largest city in his state (or 2nd or 3rd…) to Houston, a much larger city and the biggest city in Texas? It would seem to me, being a racist, that a more apt apples to apples comparison would be Houston to Los Angeles, the largest city in California and 2nd largest in the U.S., with a population of 3,898,747 people. I mean, doesn’t it make more sense to say “Let’s compare the homicides in your biggest city and our biggest city”? No and this is why….
L.A. had 268 homicides last year. That is fewer than Houston and L.A. is has a significantly larger population, but putting 268 versus 322 isn’t really all that much of a gotcha, not like contrasting 322 against 35.
Wait one second, am I seriously suggesting that the Press Office account for Gavin Newsome might be dishonest? Maybe….
There is also another factor, a big one, that Gavin’s people are ignoring. Let’s look at the demographics of San Francisco, shall we?
Because San Francisco is so ungodly expensive, it isn’t a shocker to learn that the black population is only 5.1% and dropping fast from a high of 12.3% in 1980. It might be the only large city in America with a larger Jewish population than black. What do we know about blacks in America? If we know anything we know that blacks are dramatically overrepresented in violent crime, especially murder, as blacks commit at least 60% of all murders in America. With only a tiny black population and one that is likely more affluent than the typical black population, is it a surprise that San Francisco has a relatively low number of homicides? Most of the city, almost 73%, is either White or Asian, and there are four times as many Chinese people as blacks in the city.
Now let’s look at Houston.
Houston has a black population that is shrinking relative to the overall population but still around 1/4 of the total and larger than the White population. Asians are growing quickly in the population but even combining Whites and Asians you still end up with a city that is less than 30% White/Asian. Mestizos are less violent than blacks but they still commit crime at significantly higher rates than Whites or Asians.
San Francisco is 73% White/Asian and only around 21% black and mestizo, while Houston is less than 30% White/Asian and almost 70% black and mestizo. Demographically the two cities are nearly diametric opposites.
Putting it plainly, San Francisco has far fewer total homicides than Houston for two reasons:
- Houston has a population more than 2.5 times the size of San Francisco.
- Houston and San Francisco have demographics that are mirror opposites of one another.
Weird that the press office for the Governor of California didn’t mention those facts. I might almost think they were intentionally obfuscating the issue to make Newsome look good in preparation for his expected run for the Presidency in 2028….

I’m hardly one to defend Newsome, and all your data comparisons are valid, but . . . Houston is essentially a third-world sh*thole. The people are the place. Texas is not that mythic White cowboy land of the movies – it is officially 39.8% White. Subtract the Arabs, Iranians, Jews, and it’s more like 37.5% White.
And Abbott is a wuss and a publicity hound. He’s as bad as Cornyn. Texas repukes are a waste of oxygen. With all the Californians who’ve ‘fled’ to Texas in the last decade, the state is a total loss. Not to mention no water, and ERCOT is still all-in on wind and solar power.
