This was posted by someone going by Giga Based Dad, replied to with “True” by Elon Musk and them retweeted by Alex Jones. It is a common assertion to make but is it correct?
It is not.
It is common to draw an inseparable connection between the amazing achievements of Whites in what is loosely termed Western civilization and the centrality of Christianity in Europe. It is without question that most of the accomplishments of humanity have taken place in Europe and North America, achieved by White people.
On a number of occasions I have shared these pages from Charles Murray’s magisterial work Human Accomplishment: The Pursuit of Excellence in the Arts and Sciences, 800 B.C. to 1950, a look at the greatest achievements in human history.
It is not a surprise that most significant accomplishments in the progress of human development occurred in Europe and later in North America. I pointed this out in a post The Future Of “Education” where I looked at the American dominance among the ranks of Nobel laureates. The U.S. boasts around 400 Nobel laureates, more than double the second place nation (the U.K.). The non-White world barely registers, especially in the hard sciences Nobel prizes as opposed to the B.S. stuff like the “Peace” prize.
Without Whites humanity would still be mired in a primitive, Hobbesian state. Thanks to Whites we enjoy what is commonly known as Western civilization, a term that means “White” without actually saying “White”.
The question at hand is whether Christianity is the foundation of Western civilization.
Let’s look at the question from the opposite angle. Has Christianity historically speaking elevated non-Whites?
We will look at a few examples and start with the best one: Liberia. Liberia a sub-Saharan African nation on the West coast of Africa. The nation was basically founded because do-gooder Whites helped free blacks move to the area to start a self-governing colony of descendants of America slaves. It went about as well as you would expect. Despite a nation that has a Constitution very similar to that of the United States, it has always been a disaster. What is more pertinent to this post:

I chose Liberia because it was founded with freed slaves and with a Constitution modeled after our own but it is hardly alone. Ethiopia has a long history with Christianity and is around 2/3 professing Christian, that hasn’t stopped it from being a craphole. Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia, is around 84% Christian and unlike American “Christians” they actually go to church: “An estimated 62% of the population attend religious services regularly”. Has that helped Zimbabwe? I will let you be the judge…

I can hear the objections already “Well Africans don’t practice real Christianity, it is syncretistic and mixed with primitive animism”. Sure but spend some time among American Christians and ask them some basics about their faith and you will find most of them don’t know much at all about their religion either.
Of course it is not just Africa. Most of Latin America is overwhelmingly Christian and those nations are mostly disasters. Mexico is around 90% Christian, overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, making their Jewish El Presidente even more bizarre. Mexico is also a failed narco-state not because people don’t go to Mass often enough but because Mexico is full of Mexicans. El Salvador is overwhelmingly Christian and has been a slaughterhouse for decades until the current President started locking up people wholesale in actual prisons.
Despites centuries of mission work by Whites that has actually been pretty “successful”, Christianizing the savages hasn’t made them not savage. On the flip side it is my contention that most Americans were at best “cultural Christians” throughout our nation’s history, checking the Christian box when asked and occasionally going to church but not really believing it. Most American Christians are far more fervent about their sportsball teams than they are about their alleged faith, and I say that as someone that spent many years as a Christian.
It is debatable whether Christianity has been a net positive or net negative force for Whites, kind of a chicken and the egg question. What can’t be argued is that Christianity only seems to work in White societies. Would anyone seriously argue that if Christianity has been centered in sub-Saharan Africa rather than Western Europe that sub-Saharan Africans would have accomplished even a fraction of what Europeans have accomplished? Of course not.
My point here is not to denigrate Christianity. My position is that what you do or don’t do on Sunday is your business as long as you are working on behalf of my people. What I am saying is that the foundation of Western Civilization is race and not religion. You can debate the relative merits of Christianity in the formation of Western civilization and it is inarguable that Christianity was a major influence on the arts of Western civilization but what cannot be denied is that Western Civilization is first and foremost a product of White people and that as Whites are replaced, Western civilization is collapsing not because people don’t go to church but because non-Whites simply cannot sustain Western civilization.

Very true, Arthur. The Romans advanced Whites to a tremendous level, but were Pagan worshipping. Coincidentally, they also considered themselves very religious and just. Christ changed the world to be good, decent, and kind to your fellow man, and to worship One God. There is debate as to how much Rome destroyed itself by trying to “romanize” the Goths, the Africans, and other assorted Pagans. (Mirror of us.) White culture is different and others imitating us does NOT make them us!

I largely agree with your argument. I do believe the Christianity was/is the base of what was considered ‘traditional’ western morality (right/wrong, family structure, etc.) but this happened only among White Christians. Vox Day is a blowhard and amazingly solipsistic, but he’s not wrong when he wrote that ‘Western Civilization’ is the product of and upheld by a three-legged stool: The White race, Christian faith/morality, and the learning/wisdom/achievements of the Greeks and Romans.
If followed faithfully, Christian morality may smooth the worst of the other races’ behavior, but it does not and cannot change the genetics underlying that behavior. East Asians may be ‘smart’ and have a history of some amazing inventions and discoveries, but they will drive over someone in the street without blinking – and the ‘christianity’ some of them claim to believe in does not change their hyper-ethnic behavior one iota. They also lack the philosophical foundations of Greece and Rome.
The Catholic church made a conscious decision to encourage both proselytization and miscegenation in South America. Note: My grad school book which contained this info and the name of the Catholic official who officially sanctioned and encouraged this by declaring the indios to have souls and be ‘equal’ to Europeans is in a box in my kid’s basement, so I cannot provide documentary and footnoted proof. Conversion and miscegenation did not succeed in ‘civilizing’ the natives; it unfortunately resulted in mestizos of today, and people like Puerto Ricans (average 20% black, the rest mixed native and White) and Venezuelans and Brazilians.
Even the Slavs – many of whom are brilliant and undoubtedly ‘White,’ lack one of those stool legs – the philosophical basis of Greece and Rome. They grafted it on, via Peter the Great and opening to Europe – but it was not native and that lack hindered their development for centuries.
tl;dr: Christianity is absolutely necessary but insufficient in and of itself to the success of the White race. And I say this as a baptized and believing Christian.

The meme speaks to morality. Caring for others and building up civilization isn’t part of the smash and grab people’s ethos (if they have any ethos at all).

It is not Religion per se that lifted up Western Civilization. It was the Catholic Church. Religions, in general, through most of the world, were simply belief systems that had no understanding of the natural order. Islam, Animism, Paganism, etc. had no ability to create a foundation for science.
The Catholic religion did. The Church understood God as a rational being, and saw that He could be known through His creation. They knew that His actions were not random, nor were they based upon whim or emotion. Therefore, one could study nature and have confidence that natural phenomena would be repeated. This understanding was the basis of science.
The Greeks and Romans certainly made some advances, as did the Egyptians (pyramids anyone?), Persians (they were responsible for algebra, not the muslims), and even advances in the far east and to a small extent, Latin America. But all of these advances were susceptible to loss and erasure. In Europe, however, it was the Catholic Church that not only preserved this knowledge, but expanded upon it, creating Western Civilization.
Celts, the Germanic peoples, and other pre-Christian groups were all the forerunners of White Europeans, but they did not create Western Civilization.
When you speak of Western Civilization, you are speaking of science, literacy, medicine, law, architecture, engineering, advanced agriculture, etc.
It was the Catholic Church that created the University system. It was the Catholic Church that created Hospitals. It was the Catholic Church that created the key points of the Western legal system. It was the Church that preserved philosophy, literature, and many scientific works, painstakingly copying them by hand in the monasteries. It was the Catholics that preserved the Latin language that even now is the basis of science. It was the Catholic Church that educated themselves, the nobility, and even the common man as cultural shifts allowed.
Yes, the Catholic Church was mostly white during this time, but you simply cannot speak intelligently about Western Civilization without speaking intelligently about the Catholic Church.
It is absolutely undeniable by any measure that the Catholic Church was responsible for creating most of, and preserving the rest of, Western Civilization.
“Whiteness” by itself does not provide the drive, structure, or end goals that make any sort of civilization.
If you noticed my comment I stated that Christianity was necessary but insufficient in and of itself – plenty of mestizos are Catholic and their countries are still sh*tholes (i.e. lacking vital factor of White race). What the Catholic church did do, that was vital, was place limits on consanguinity. On the one hand, this led to people trusting a broader group of people (i.e. roots of high trust western society) and on the other, it prevented inbreeding and many of the excesses/sins of sexual morality explicitly permitted/encouraged by Judaism and Mohammedism.
