If hypothetically someone had a CMMG Resolute in Sniper Grey like this one:
And was interested in painting some varied stripes on the receiver and handguard just to break up the silhouette a little but wanted to use black and or a lighter colored paint and a brush instead of a spray can, what sort of paint would work best? Or doesn’t it matter?
Hypothetically of course.
Stove paint. Like the stuff for stovepipes.
Mantis system.
Practice.
First hit wins.
Hypothetically a fellow could use the Rustoleum brand camo paint. Available in many colors. Nice flat paint suitable for duck boats, surplus ammo cans, and such. Fairly durable. Works better when thinned a bit with mineral spirits. Surface preparation is always essential to good paint adhesion. Not that I would condone hunting defenseless ducks or owning firearms other than a Brown Bess musket.
Big Country Expat had a post on that about a year ago. Probably archived on his blog.

I believe Rustoleum makes non-spray versions of their paint as well
Mr. Gun and Gear on YT has a series of vids on painting an AR. Ive done a dozen or so paint jobs for people and regular paint is OK but will wear after awhile from hard use. Aluma-Hyde from Brownells is more of a permanent finish. It won’t wear off.
You can spray the paint into plastic cup and use a sponge torn into pieces or shapes or use the cheap sponge paint brushes. Practice on an old cardboard box first.
Fuckin’ send it bud!
Check out T-Rex Arms… Lucas has a very good video doing a rattle can job on a couple of different pieces.
In addition to the Trex-arms vid, John at Alpha Charlie Concepts (YT) also did a rattle can paint job. I combined the two techniques on one of mine. Just basic Krylon camo paint from Lowes. I used three colors; laid down Khaki all over, then layered in some OD green and OD brown. I traced the template John used (from Primary Arms) and cut out a stencil from an old file folder on my laser engraver. The paint does where off with use, but it’s easy to touch up.
I also done Duracoat, which while requiring a lot more prep along with a proper airbrush to apply does hold up much better.
