Violent crimes — domestic violence, aggravated assaults, homicides — occur throughout the city of Jackson, but Jackson Police Department Chief RaShall Brackney said the full picture as to why those crimes are happen is more nuanced than headlines alone.
The Jackson Police Department’s data shows 50 homicides were investigated from January through Aug. 13, 2026, with about an 84% clearance rate. That means roughly four of every five cases ended with an arrest.
For comparison, JPD saw 135 homicides in 2022 with a clearance rate at 47%, while 2025 data showed 63 homicides and about an 89% clearance rate.

Jackson isn’t a very large city at all, the population is somewhere around 150,000 depending on your source which ranks it around the 203rd largest city in America and in the bottom half of state capitals. On the other hand I asked Grok to rank all 50 U.S. capital cities by murder rate and this is where Jackson really shines!
I wouldn’t use those rankings as gospel truth, with everything on AI your mileage may vary etc., but I am pretty confident that however you slice it Jackson, MS is by a pretty wide margin the most violent state capital in America.

Well, this girl police chief doesn’t have to worry about 78.9% of her neighbors being black, because she is effectively insulated from her fellow citizens. She has an around the clock protection detail, she is driven everywhere she needs to go, and she has other people doing the mundane errands of life for her (grocery shopping, going to the drug store, etc).
