Chicago man gets 12+ years for robbing suburban bank with fire extinguisher

A Chicago man who used mace and a fire extinguisher to rob a suburban bank has been sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to the crime, according to court records.
Emeril England robbed the Huntington Bank at 1220 Meadow Road in Northbrook on May 28, 2025, wearing a disguise he ordered online to conceal his identity. He chose that particular branch, according to prosecutors, because he was familiar with its layout, and he had scouted a concealed spot to park his car undetected. Unfortunately for England, his out-of-the-way parking job caught the eye of a Metra employee who later tipped off investigators, leading to his arrest.
Prosecutors said England entered the bank and sprayed tellers with mace in an effort to force them away from their cash drawers, but it was an ineffective tactic. One teller, believing he might be experiencing a mental health crisis, asked him, “Dude, are you okay?”
Not getting the reaction he wanted, England grabbed the bank’s fire extinguisher and discharged it toward the tellers, officials said. As smoke filled the lobby, tellers fled their stations, and one left a drawer open in the process, according to court records. England allegedly took approximately $4,915 from that drawer before running from the bank.

In seeking a 151-month sentence for England, federal prosecutors said he has a “documented mental health history” and “some cognitive impairments,” but argued he remains capable of planning and carrying out crimes of violence. To that point, they claimed that while in custody for the Northbrook robbery, England made notes about future bank robberies.
Well of course he has cognitive impairments. He’s black.
When I was a bank manager, my branches were never robbed but one I used to manage was later “robbed” by a woman who went into the branch, demanded money and then sat on the sidewalk waiting for the cops because she wanted to go back to jail.
