The shooting occurred at a venue called Willie’s Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island in South Carolina. The bar is located on….wait for it…. “Dr.” Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Well of course it is. Wait, there’s more!
St. Helena Island is known as the epicenter of a culture of people descended from African slaves known as Gullah Geechee. The bar and grill where the shooting occurred describes itself as serving authentic Gullah cuisine.
According to the National Park Service, the Gullah Geechee people were forcibly brought to work on rice, cotton, and indigo plantations along the Atlantic Coast. But the isolation of the islands allowed enslaved people to retain indigenous West and Central African traditions that can still be seen in Gullah cuisine, art, and spiritual tradition, the park service said.
Island dwellers also spoke Gullah, an African Creole language unique to the area.
St. Helena sits within the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, a National Heritage Area established by Congress in 2006 that runs from Pender County, North Carolina, to St. Johns County, Florida, according to the park service. A National Heritage Area is a site considered to be culturally or historically significant.

I also have a personal pet peeve regarding changing language and word meanings. For my entire life (60 plus years) those put into involuntary servitude were called slaves. It was a clear and apt word to describe them. Over the last several years one no longer sees or hears “slaves”, it is now “enslaved persons” or “enslaved people”. Clunky and awkward. Nor does the change in language improve the lot of those that were slaves. It’s like calling the homeless unhoused which is another woke stupidity. I refuse to use either term.

We saw plenty of those Gullah Geechee ghouls at the ‘slave market’ in Charleston, SC on our last visit in 2021. Curiously dark, vaguely humanoid females about 110 years old, eeking and ooking at one another in their strange tongue, weaving beach grass into useless ornamental baskets that fawning AWFLS hoping to polish their anti-racism cred forked over obscene amounts of money for. I was there to pick up a Confederate battle flag, which I proudly wore like a cape for the afternoon. A few ‘tourists’ snapped surreptitious photos of me as I passed by, likely landing me on the SPLC hate crime blotter. Again.

When you have to warn about gang affiliations and weapons at a public event, you know civilization has evaporated.
I know this area better than most. There was a time fifty-odd years ago where there was a very gentlemanly culture there. They were very poor, and isolated and segregated and far happier then. They dressed for occasions. They had manners and standards and were a much more civilized community.
They also had their downsides. Voodoo has a particular stronghold. The old white sheriff was an actual witchdoctor. True story. Without a strong arm of control and with the enabling and encouragement of the federal government, they have descended into the ghetto culture that we see today, and it is irreprable. One could throw a stone from the ‘nightclub’ to the grounds of the Penn Center. It is the site of the first school for freed slaves in the nation. It was founded by – ahem – two white women. MLK wrote his ‘I have a dream’ speech there, as he frequented a cabin there during the ‘civil rights’ movement. There is a large pile of liquor and beer bottles in the woods adjacent to that cabin that is protected, but not advertised by the National Park Service. They were thrown there by THE MAN himself.
It was once a quite, strikingly beautiful area amidst the vast tomato fields and marshes on the way to the beach. Now, tragically, it is a ‘no go zone.’ The gullah culture was a real thing. It is not longer. It is now a battering ram used to get ‘more free shit’ and to punish whitey.
