This was supposed to go out this morning but my website was being weird.
The dust is still settling in Iran but the fog of war is as thick as always. What we don’t know this morning far outweighs what we do know but….
- Israel seems to have achieved almost complete surprise despite telegraphing this was coming all week. U.S. personnel and embassies had received public warning and yet more than few obvious Iranian targets were apparently just sitting in their homes watching reruns of I Love Lucy when the strikes hit.
- Iran is likely to officially declare war on Israel, I don’t think they have any choice.
- A number of top Iranian leaders were killed along with a lot of civilians. You don’t drop an apartment building without a lot of casualties.
- Nuclear sites like the Natanz facility were attacked but from what I understand their most sensitive sites are buried so deep that they are almost impossible to get to.
- Everyone is bracing for a major response from Iran, I assume their leadership is talking to allies before doing anything but to quote The Dude…..
Some of what I am reading would suggest that pieces were in place for a long time for this attack, that makes sense since Netanyahu has been telling the U.S. for decades that Iran was just weeks away from building a nuke.
Oil prices are going to spike, gas early this morning was already up locally.
What seems apparent to me is that Trump has lost even the semblance of control in the Middle East. The administration was trying to stay out of it last night but Israeli media gleefully reported that the U.S. was in the know and perhaps even blessed the attack, so either the Trump team is lying or the Israelis are lying. Probably both.
As to the timing. Why now?

A) Israel felt that their window for this sort of provocation was closing so they finally launched the attack that they have been wanting to launch for a long time. No one with half a brain believes the “weeks away from nuclear weapons” bullshit. Maybe it was that Iran was installing new air defense systems or maybe Israel can read the tea leaves and see that unquestioning support for Israel is a Boomer thing so they decided to try to drag us into a war while old people could still push the U.S. to send young people to die for Israel.

B) Israel feels untouchable. Despite the “antisemitic” protests at U.S. colleges, both at the Federal and state level more laws and resolutions are constantly passed condemning as “antisemitic” any criticism of the Zionist secular ethnostate. Whatever Trump or Vance might say about noninterventionism, it is clear that their party is practically speaking completely sold out for Israel. Israel has wanted to attack Iran and draw the U.S. into a war to wipe out another regional rival and they must have decided this was the most opportune window.
I suspect it is a combination of the two but the political situation in America contributed far more than any bogus claims of “IMMINENT NUCLEAR ATTACK!”.
While Cumala Harris is “married” to a homosexual Jew named Doug Emhoff, the Democrats have a real split in their support for Israel with most upper echelon “leaders” being completely sold out while the younger grassroots liberals are mostly anti-Zionist. If she had “won” the war in Ukraine would be getting more money and Israel perhaps a little less.
The GOP is as close to universally in lockstep with Israel as you can get with only a few holdouts like Rand Paul, and he has damaged his brand so badly over the last week or so that he has no future in the Republican party. Younger generations of Americans are significantly less likely to attend any church, much less an evangelical church, and this means the drumbeat of Zionist propaganda isn’t reaching them (see: Secularization And Zionism). The future of Zionism in America as a broadly supported position is grim although AIPAC still controls most of Congress.
Unfortunately there isn’t a better option politically as the non-Zionist side is even worse. This popped up in my feed this morning….

What if the Trump administration is hoping this triggers some jihad responses in the US in order to increase support for their deportation efforts, and maybe give them an excuse for martial law or something?
