Though we still may be some weeks out until summertime, one of the go-to hairstyles for Black women during that season —a.k.a. braids— just might not see a resurgence thanks to a new consumer report. And what it revealed just might come as a shock.
In the newly-released report done by Consumer Reports and corroborated by NBC News, it found that cancer-causing carcinogens were present in at least 10 popular synthetic hair brand products used for braiding hairstyles. Those brands included ones like Sensationnel, Shake-N-Go, and more.
Per the report, all the brands that were tested “contained multiple carcinogens” that could cause diseases like acute myeloid leukemia and other carcinogens like lead, benzene and more. The report also tested the products for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and found that “every sample tested had detectable levels of at least six VOCs” with the highest amount of VOCs in one product reaching up to 14. The most prevalent one was acetone, which can cause respiratory irritation among other symptoms.
Once these findings began to hit the news cycle, many Black women took to social media to sound the alarm and express their disappointment, hurt and anger. One Instagram user Yaneek Page spoke her peace and called attention to the National Institute of Health’s reports sounding the alarm on the same thing back in 2023.
“We have no idea what the long-term affects…will be,” she said. “It’s just important information to know, to share, to be empowered.”….
….In a separate video, others discussed how cosmetic and hair products marketed to Black women often carry the most toxic ingredients. This video echoes that of another recently released analysis from EWG and published on The Guardian in late February that found that “80% of more than 4,000 beauty products marketed toward Black women contain at least one moderately hazardous ingredient – and most contain multiple.”

Women in general subject their bodies to so much potentially dangerous crap in the desperate effort to get that deeply coveted male attention. Black women are just more extreme, due to the stone cold fact that they are, by far, the least attractive females on the planet.
I read somewhere that the production of female beauty products (hair dyes, straighteners, makeup, perfumes, many others) is the second most-polluting human industry after petroleum distillation. I think about this every time some self-important shrieking harridan (looking at you, AOC) lectures the rest of us about climate change while pushing so-called ‘green’ initiatives.

Well said. There seems to be no end to the toxic crap that wimmen buy mostly to spur the envy of other wimmen. In the eighties I remember hearing about a string of “beauty” shop operators that all got cancer which was attributed to smoking cigarettes. I bet smoking cigs in fresh air is ten times less toxic than huffing all that hair spray, permanent solution, hair dyes and whatall else in enclosed spaces. Its quite horrifying. Even the fingernail stuff-especially “acrylics”-is carcinogenic. The perfumes alone in most of those products is highly toxic assailing nearly all the body’s systems. Dryly and sarcastically I will add that there is no amount of fingernail painting or hair dye that will ever cover over a hundred excess pounds of body fat and an ill-tempered personality.

The initial developers and marketers of specifically black hair care and ‘beauty’ products were other blacks. And they are heavily advertised and promoted regardless of market share. The closest Walmart to me, in a 90% White town, has explicitly black ‘beauty’ products and toys, which invariably end up on the clearance aisle. In addition to glue-on nails, eyelashes, and hair (‘weaves’), those who can afford it narrow their noses and bleach their skin – and don’t seem to worry about the chemicals in that. Look at before and after photos of Nikki Minaj and Mindy Kaling. They all want to be black(ish) or brown(ish) (or, in the case of Korean women, asian(ish)). Aping whiter skin and features but still retaining enough of their original appearance to claim ethnic/racial cred.
Isn’t it odd that black women try so desperately to look like White women?

While I’ve no doubt these products are loaded with nasty chemicals, they seem to have overlooked that big pharma and big AG (and consumer beauty products can be included here) are trying to kill us all. rest assured, this isn’t a conspiracy against African kweenz, it is a conspiracy to fuck up the health and well being of everyone who doesn’t pay very close attention, and exercises very tight control over what medicines, hygiene products and foods they use/consume. Welcome to my world, where reading labels and foregoing shit I’d like to eat (because it tastes good) is a constant daily battle of me against the system.
The one real difference is that I’m not possessed of the vanity these negresses are. I give myself a clipper cut – #2 on the sides, #3 on top – every three weeks, and my hair color is still natural brownish, but going white at an increasing pace these days. I’ve no need for hundreds of dollars a month in hair care product, just basic shampoo. Hell, I don’t even use hairspray anymore, since I keep it so short it looks perfect right out of bed in the morning.
I know that style may not work for the ladies, even of the darker persuasion, but they have to decide whether they want a certain look (at the expense of their health) or if they want to give the big piss off to companies making this industrial sludge they apply to their heads. I will say this is one aspect of life where it really is good to be a man, even with the weight of the world on my shoulders.
I figured out several years ago that I can spend $20 for a bad flat-top, or I can do it myself and get a bad flat top at home for free. At some point they must’ve stopped teaching “flat-tops” at barber school.

And when I was a kid and first started paying for my own haircuts, you could at least get a bit of interesting conversation with the hair cutter person-man or woman-that you’d likely consider saying hi to out on the street. Seems like about twenty five years ago or so things started shifting to where you mostly get indifference if you even get someone that speekee inglee.
Ha! No flat top for me (I just do a standard clipper cut) as I know a flat top would be beyond my skill level. But it works, is low maintenance, and keeps me cooler in the summer. I have thick, coarse hair that just keeps growing out until it looks like a hybrid of Lou Ferigno and Bob’s Big Boy. I could never grow long hair as a result (not that I ever really wanted to). The only person who ever complained has been my mom, she thinks I cut it too short. Shit grows so fast it almost needs touching up in just over two weeks.
I use Wahl Pro Series llithium ion dog clippers when I get my super-fine Finnish locks cut, do the beard at the same time. I just make sure they were cleaned since the last butt-shaving, but growing it out until I get it caught in the creeper wheels again.
Usually trim my eyebrows more than my hair, them suckers get some evil mutant 14-ga spider-leg-looking sumbitches that hang down and poke me in the eye.
All of this. Most consumer products, especially food, are intentionally designed to be unhealthy. They provide you with calories and keep you alive but that is about all.
I wonder what percentage of companies that manufacture black hair products are owned by blacks? Are dey tryin’ to kill da sistas?
A few months ago my wife was researching who owns who in the zoo, and the vanity/hygiene industry is purty much owned by the same three or four companies. There might be some smaller boutique or “garage” brands out there but most of it is all owned by the big guys.
In fairness a lot of the weird speciality shampoos have items described as carcinogenic or that have artificial estrogen in them.
They would be far better off not to braid at all, as it’s a big contributing factor to the receding hairlines and later need for wigs that many black women have. It’s called tension alopecia. Pulling the follicle so tightly eventually kills the hair and it never grows back. Same for the boys with their man-buns, aka douche knots.

We see this a lot with Amish women, they keep their hair parted and pulled back into a bun and some do it so severely that it kills their hair and they end up with big bald patches. The smarter ones often leave their hair down or loosely bundled at night.
I hired an ENORMOUS white bitch to come groom a dog. We were outside when she started complaining about my cigarette.
