Prosecutors say a Chicago man Googled how to kill someone with a hammer before using one to beat to death a transgender woman he had been in a relationship with.
Deandre Bell, 24, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Davonta Curtis, 31, whose body was found by family members inside her apartment in the 2400 block of West Lake Street on April 8. Prosecutors said she had been in an on-again-off-again relationship with Bell.
In a detention filing, prosecutors said the two spent part of Easter Sunday together and video showed them returning to Curtis’ apartment building that evening. Sometime between 11:40 p.m. that night and early the next morning, Bell struck Curtis repeatedly in the head with a hammer, prosecutors alleged. Surveillance video then shows Bell leaving the apartment building alone at 1 a.m. on the morning after Easter.
Curtis’ sisters, concerned after not hearing from her for a couple of days, found her body naked and partially covered by a sheet. Her blue 2009 Hyundai and her car keys were missing from the apartment.
Chicago police issued a bulletin for the vehicle, and officers later located it in the 2400 block of West Lake Street, with Bell behind the wheel, according to prosecutors. They took him into custody, and Bell signed consent forms allowing investigators to search his phone and backpack.

Inside Bell’s backpack, investigators allegedly found a tool belt containing a hammer with suspect blood on the claw. Suspect blood was also found on a screwdriver and a tablet found in the backpack.
A search of Bell’s phone uncovered two searches that prosecutors say were made before Curtis’ death: “how to kill someone with a hammer?” and “if a person gets hit in the head with a hammer while sleeping what happens.” Prosecutors did not offer a motive for the murder in their detention filing.
I have a question. Even for a sub, do you really need information of “how to kill someone with a hammer”? I would think it would be self-explanatory, the sub-humans in 2001: A Space Odyssey figured out how to kill each other with a thigh bone without the benefit of a Google search.
