Not being a sado-masochist I did not watch one second of Trump’s first State of the Union of his second term. Everyone knew what it would be:
- Trump wildly bragging about how everything is great, perhaps greater than it has even been which we all know isn’t remotely true.
- Most Republicans sitting and standing like an especially long Catholic mass and clapping like trained seals.
- Democrats scowling and looking angry at things any normal human being who cared about America would celebrate.
Just a shitshow and I wasn’t having it. The only moment of levity was the Geico Caveman, Representative Al Green of Texas, being tossed out for holding up a sign that read: “black people aren’t apes!”, which of course was immediate fodder for meme shenanigans.
A little advice Congressman? If you have to hold up a sign saying black people aren’t apes, they probably are. I don’t go around holding up a sign reading “White people aren’t avocados!” or “White people aren’t Chevy Camaros!” because no one thinks we are. Yet here we are in 2026 and blacks still get butthurt about comparisons to apes and that says a lot more about black self-image than it does about the Orange Man.
Setting the performative nonsense aside, ridiculous clapping by Republicans and scowls and shouts from Democrat subs, one thing is clear:
There is nothing that unites the two halves of America and nothing that keeps us together other than apathy and the threat of violence from the Feds.
That’s it. There is no shared identity. In every possible way one side especially goes out of it’s way to emphasize our differences and weaponize them for political gain. We don’t like each other and haven’t for a long time, and that dislike has grown into hate that is expressing itself in violence more frequently than at any time since the 60s.
Bullshit performances like the State of the Union are silly kabuki theater. Trump could send a letter outlining the State of the Union and fulfill the Constitutional requirements.
He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient – Article II, Section 3 of the United States Constitution
The real state of the union, something Trump won’t say because he prefers empty rhetoric and jerking off to himself on stage, is that things are bad and getting worse. The Union is ruptured beyond repair. People are unhappy and angry, and many are ready to take out their frustration on others via violence. If we had any adults in charge we would be having a conversation about how to peacefully dissolve the Union but the people in charge are stupid and evil. You can’t overstate just how dumb these people are, on both sides of the aisle.
Instead of hitting the brakes and calling a timeout before we go over the cliff, the two sides who are in reality the same, are making things worse in the belief that they will be insulated from the chaos of collapse. Many powerful people in history have thought they were untouchable, right up until the noose tightened around their neck, the guillotine blade dropped and the commander order the squad to fire.
As delightful as it will be to see certain heads land in baskets, it will be ugly for all of us to get there.
