Toledo police officer accused of theft, placed on restricted duty
A seven-year veteran of the Toledo Police Department has been put on restricted duty after being charged with theft following a pair of incidents at the Holland Walmart.
Toledo police on Wednesday confirmed that Gregory Long, Jr., 42, had been put on restricted duty and was under investigation by internal affairs. Hired in July, 2018, he had been assigned to the training section.
He is accused of stealing from the Walmart at 1355 S. McCord Rd. on two different occasions in recent months. Two separate counts of first degree misdemeanor theft were filed by Holland police in Sylvania Municipal Court on Aug. 19….
….On May 22, while wearing a Toledo Police Department T-shirt with a badge logo on the front of the shirt, Officer Long is accused of failing to scan $1.97 worth of cheese at a self-checkout register. He then left the store with the item without paying.
On June 4 he again used a self-checkout register. On that occasion, he failed to scan items — cinnamon sticks and razor blades — worth $28.92. He again left the store with the merchandise without paying.
In both instances, Holland police reviewed the surveillance video and saw Officer Long fail to scan multiple items before putting them in a plastic bag and leaving the store.
A little over $30 worth of stuff and he has been arrested. For $30 in stuff.
Once could be a mistake but doing it twice at the same store about a week apart shows a pattern.
The guy is a cop, you would think he would understand that those stations are under surveillance. I wonder why they were looking at him, sure he is a 2G but he was wearing a Toledo police t-shirt. Maybe that is what caught their eye?
It is just dumb but it is exactly the sort of thing you would expect. He figured he was being sly and wouldn’t get caught and perhaps that even if he did nothing would happen because he is a cop. There must be a little more to the story, I am not sure why they would arrest him for such a small amount of merchandise but perhaps being a cop the courts are making an example of him.
I am not sure he will be fired, the police union normally fights tooth and nail to prevent that but still….what a moron.
It might not be the best idea in the world to give 2Gs badges and guns…..

Of all the people with a badge (police or otherwise) I worry most about the insecure ones, the ones with an axe to grind. It manifests as bossy behavior and a very short fuse. And they’ll flip the switch over stupid stuff because of the insecurity and resentment that’s the core of their personality.
