Perhaps the greatest example of just how fake and gay our politics truly is would be George W. Bush. When he was in office, the Left and Their media mouthpieces would endlessly screech that W was the devil with the obligatory references to LITERALLY HITLER. Bush was the worst thing to happen to America since….forever.
Then a funny thing happened. The Orange Man came along and Bush started being mildly critical of him. All of a sudden Bush was rehabilitated. His transformation put Saul of Tarsus, the infamous persecutor of Christians who became Paul, perhaps the greatest missionary in Christian history, to shame.
Did people suddenly forget that Bush had allegedly flubbed the Hurricane Katrina response and of course had lied us into invading Iraq at a cost of thousands of American casualties and tens or hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqi civilians? Nope, it turned out none of that had mattered in the least. George W was just playing a part he was assigned, maybe without even knowing it because he really is a stupid man. Not AOC or Dan Quayle moronic but plenty stupid in his own right.
While Bush was popular with rank and file Republicans because of his alleged (and I believe completely phony) evangelical credentials, where he was really popular was among the neocon think tanks and pundit class. Neocons went overboard supporting W. Bush because of his insane new doctrine that included pre-emptive strikes. Few people, not even those that consider themselves astute observers of American politics, know that the Bush inner circle was talking about invading Iraq with a couple of days of the 9/11 attacks. While Bush was standing in the rubble of the World Trade Center bellowing into a bullhorn, his advisers were in D.C. plotting to remake American foreign policy with a new preemptive posture and with an eye on….Russia.
Yep, Russia.
While we know about the “you are with us or against us” aspects of the Bush doctrine, what is less well known is that the new policy also requires that no other power be permitted to become even a threat to U.S. hegemony. This wasn’t an idea Bush came up with, I doubt he had ever had a substantive idea in his life. Bush was being advised by people like Dick Cheney, at one time the living embodiment of evil, Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle and David Frum. The neoconservative cabal that whispered into the oversized ears of Bush like Grima Wormtongues all had managed to avoid putting their own lives on the line in combat but were eager to send Americans to die in the sand for Israel.
Bush set us on a path to seeking not a free world where other people and nations could seek out their own path but one where every other nation on Earth would always be watching the U.S. to avoid getting on our bad side. Without a counter-force in the Soviet Union, America now ruled the world or so we thought.
This is a major shift that points from the early days after 9/11 to our world today and it portended a bloody road that is still unfolding in front of our eyes in the war in Ukraine. In 2008 Bush even went so far as to call for Georgia and Ukraine to be admitted to NATO, an organization already obsolete, in order to provide a threat on the western border of Russia.
Those capable of still asking questions and thinking critically might wonder why a territorial dispute in Ukraine, a nation few Americans can locate on a map (especially people talking about how much they support Ukraine), has been the recipient of so much attention, support and of course money. It has nothing to do with Ukraine or the Ukrainian people or bullshit principles like “democracy”. It has everything to do with Russia and trying to harm Vodka Man Bad.
With the rise of Trump in 2016 as the single defining and dominating figure in the Republican party, the shift by the neo-conservatives was dramatic. The small cabal that ran GOP foreign policy for decades found themselves mostly on the outside looking in and the backlash was intense. Many of the people who effectively had been running the Republican party and defining “conservatism” were no longer attacking liberals and instead were attacking Trump and the people who supported him, unwashed Whites from the Midwest and the South who bought their suits off the rack if they even owned one and had never even been to a Georgetown cocktail party. Do people in Appalachia even read The New York Times?
Writers and pundits like Bill Kristol, Mona Charen and Jennifer Rubin (guess what They all have in common) turned on the Republican Party and demanded a return to the days of John McCain and George W Bush. The neocons even managed to convince a goofball Mormon named Evan McMullin to run against Trump in 2016 and later to run against fellow Mormon Mike Lee for the Senate, ironic as Lee had supported and voted for McMullin in his 2016 Quixotic campaign against Trump.
In 2016 and 2020 most of the neocons were critical of Trump but in 2024 hundreds of Them have come right out and endorsed Cumala over Trump. Cumala is one of the most extreme leftists to ever run for President and yet the very group that once steered conservative policy is endorsing her because They find Trump distasteful?
Nah no one is buying that, not anyone that is paying attention. I didn’t vote for Trump in 2016 because I didn’t really care for him as a person and I assumed he wouldn’t do much. I was mostly correct about that other than the Supreme Court but even though I didn’t vote for Trump I sure as hell didn’t vote for Hillary Clinton. How could anyone vote for someone like her that wasn’t a baby killing feminist harpy?
So this “sudden” shift by the neocons isn’t really a shift at all. It is more of an unmasking. What rank and file Republicans are discovering is that the party that they thought was representing them was in fact never representing them at all and instead what they thought of as “their party” was ruled by people that hated them. For people in Coruscant-On-The-Potomac, those of us living in the rest of the country are little more than tax cattle, a peasant class that makes stuff and provides stuff like food and electricity for the Beautiful People in D.C.. It reminds me a lot of The Hunger Games books with D.C. being District One.
The hundreds of “Republicans” that are endorsing Cumala were certainly Republicans (see: It Is Time To Retire RINO) because the GOP has been for all of my life two parties under the same name, one representing the interests of the elite class mostly concerned with wars for Israel and lower taxes and regulations for corporations and the other made up of the people who actually vote to elect Republicans. Their concerns were irrelevant to the national leadership.
Starting with George W. Bush we saw conservatism and the GOP being controlled by people that were basically pro-war Democrats. As They have drifted toward the Democrat party more openly, that party that once was allegedly anti-war is now the home of the worst warmongers. Jennifer Rubin, Bill Kristol and their loathsome ilk have always been Democrats and thanks to the Orange Man They have unmasked Themselves.
